You Will GRASPAGAIN
Grasp with your intention

How it works

You grasp. GRASPAGAIN moves you

01

Sense

Electrodes on the skin of the forearm measure electrical muscle activity. This method is called electromyography. Nothing is implanted.

02

Process

Electronics and software analyse the signals in real time and recognise whether you want to grasp, hold or release. The control is tuned to your personal signals.

03

Move

A lightweight hand orthosis with a motor unit moves your fingers. It is designed to be worn in everyday life.

01 / Sensing

It starts with your signal

The closed sensor band sits on the participant's forearm while a hand checks its fit during the experiment.

Electrodes on the skin measure the electrical activity of the forearm muscles. These signals provide the input for the controller, even when an attempted movement does not yet produce visible hand movement.

Measurable residual activity is required. Suitability is assessed individually.

02 / Control & actuation

Turning activity into assistance

The participant's arm and orthosis in front of the virtual-hand monitor during the experiment.

Software interprets the muscle signals. The control unit connects this interpretation to the motorised actuation of the orthosis. The system is tuned to individual signals.

The image shows the virtual hand on the monitor during the experiment.

03 / Hand orthosis

Assistance, right at your hand

The participant grasps a banana with the worn hand orthosis at the experiment table.

The orthosis transfers actuation force to the fingers. Flexible elements and contact surfaces connect the mechanism to the hand and assist opening and closing.

Research prototype. Design and implementation are being developed further.

Who it is for

Who GRASPAGAIN is being developed for

  • Hand paralysis after stroke
  • Spinal cord injury affecting the hands
  • Hand paralysis after traumatic brain injury
  • Other neurological causes of hand paralysis

Key requirement: measurable muscle activity

GRASPAGAIN needs residual activity in your forearm muscles. We assess this through a detailed measurement.
